Short answer: remove the source of odours, ventilate before you drive, spray a perfume-grade car fragrance onto fabric rather than plastic, and store the bottle away from direct sun. Heat amplifies every smell in a closed car — good and bad — so the routine matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere else.
Why cars smell worse in UAE summers
A car parked outdoors in Dubai in July can reach cabin temperatures above 60°C. Heat speeds up evaporation from upholstery, carpets, food crumbs and even plastics, which is why a car that smells fine in January can feel stale by June. Humidity on the coast adds a musty note to air-conditioning systems.
A five-step routine
1. Remove the source
Vacuum floor mats and seats weekly, empty door pockets and check under seats for food. Fragrance should finish a clean car, not cover a dirty one.
2. Refresh the AC
Replace the cabin air filter at least once a year — twice if you drive daily in Dubai or Abu Dhabi. A clogged filter is the most common cause of a musty smell when the AC starts.
3. Ventilate before you drive
Open the windows or run the fan on fresh-air mode for the first minute. You release trapped hot air and the fragrance you apply afterwards will smell cleaner.
4. Choose the right scent for the season
Fresh citrus and aromatic scents such as Lime Rush feel best in peak summer. Soft musks like Musk Lavender work all year. Save rich oud and vanilla for evenings and the cooler months.
5. Spray fabric, not plastic
Two to three sprays onto floor mats or fabric seats last far longer than spraying the air alone. Avoid the dashboard, screens and leather. See our full how-to-use guide.
Store your fragrance correctly
Never leave a perfume bottle on the dashboard. Keep it in the glovebox, door pocket or centre console, away from direct sunlight, so the scent stays true for longer.
